About WEndy Batt
Born in Essex, England and raised in Toronto. At the age of 8, I was fortunate to become friends with a Japanese girl, named Naomi. She shared many beautiful things about her culture and introduced me to the ancient art of origami. My first model being the traditional crane, a symbol of hope and peace. 35+ years later my dear friend, Naomi now sends origami paper from Japan.
Graphic designer by profession, Origami Artist, Maker, Jewelery Designer and nature lover. Inspired by the unfolding of nature and geometry that exists in all things. It wasn't until my later years, after exploring many other mediums and techniques, that I rediscovered the art of origami. The possibilities of folding shapes are endless. Methodical and meditative. Seeing a sheet of paper transform merely by folds is captivating. Origami showcases the beauty in math and speaks the universal language of sacred geometry.
Not only excited by the models, finding the perfect paper for a model is a joy. The paper is an art in itself and it’s a passion exploring masterfully handmade papers from around the globe, especially Japan, such as chiyogami, midare, katazome-shi, gampi, etc.
As an active committee member of the Origami Society of Toronto it’s fun to meet up on a monthly basis with fellow folding enthusiasts as well as teach/demo around the city.
Origami has been passed down and shared for centuries (origami became popular in the Edo period 1603–1868). I thoroughly enjoy sharing this beautiful art form, passing it on to those of all ages and abilities. Origami is timeless. From formally teaching or showing my ‘neighbour’ on the subway how to fold a simple animal, it delights all!
